Chapter 17

The coarseness of the bathroom floor’s grout shaved smooth a jagged edge of Rose’s fingernail as she absently ran her hand up and down the grit between two white marble tiles. Swirls of gray skimmed in and out of each two-inch hexagon slab as her fingers followed the grout lines. They were the smallest rough patches she could find in a suite of rooms full of abrasive surfaces and daunting expectations. Hell, even the cool marble under her butt expanded out wider than her entire living room, kitchen, and bathroom combined.

A glass shower stall so large it boasted a matching tiled bench seat stood across from her. To its right sat a jetted tub worthy of its owner’s size and stature . . . a size and stature she tried very hard not to dwell on at the moment. Sparkling porcelain and shimmering glass twinkled every which way she looked. And all Rose could do was press her tailbone farther down into the marble as she gripped her knees, hoping the pain would somehow wake her the fuck up.

Her forehead hit the tops of her knees as she exhaled. But when the warm air that left her lungs merely stagnated in front of her, having nowhere to easily escape, she sat back up again and leaned her head against the vanity. She tried to wrap her mind around just when, exactly, the world had gotten so freaking big.

Prior to her stroll in the park, her life had been about finding her sister. Every breath she took into her lungs had been focused on sustaining her body long enough so she could find Tammy. And now? Those breaths had to do more, go further. They had to fuel this unimaginable light inside her that somehow elevated her status on the importance scale to literal holier-than-thou proportions.

Rose held out her hands in front of her and wiggled her fingers. Whatever was inside her didn’t affect her motor skills. She was able to walk and move like normal, able to eat and breathe like normal. And when she turned her attention inward, scanning her body for anything that felt off, nothing threw up any red flags. Although, there had been changes, that was for sure, but none she suspected were due to any angelic light inside her.

For starters, the sharp pangs in her stomach had lessened. Where eating had been a bodily necessity before, here, with Titan, he seemed to view it as an act of service. Before she could even think about shutting down her hunger, Titan had been there with a hot cup of tea or a freshly prepared meal. It didn’t matter whether it was an appropriate mealtime or a common eating hour. Her unspoken needs always seemed to blossom brightly and boldly in his thoughts in a way that hit differently from Carla’s Sunday leftover casseroles.

But another tension had lessened as well. Her tiring need to go it alone. Faith. Support. Encouragement and teamwork. All these things had jumped ship along with her loved ones once she refused to give up searching for Tammy.
